Homes for Single Mothers

Among the statutory goals of the Stanisław Grygiel Family Support Foundation, an important place is given to providing comprehensive assistance to pregnant women and mothers with young children, both before and after childbirth. Special care and a variety of support services are therefore offered to women raising children on their own.

The Foundation runs two Homes for Single Mothers – one in Kraków (ul. Przybyszewskiego) and one in Wadowice (ul. Sadowa). These homes have for years provided shelter for expectant mothers and young women who have found themselves in difficult life situations.

At the Home for Single Mothers on ul. Przybyszewskiego in Kraków, a "Window of Life" has also been operating since 2006, through which the lives of many newborns have been saved.

Why HFSM?

A Home that Offers Support

Giving birth is a transformative experience for any woman. When accompanied by crisis or hardship, it becomes a time when particular support is needed. The core mission of the Home for Single Mothers is to provide that support during this beautiful, yet often challenging, time.
Stays at the home are temporary, offering care for the woman and her child from pregnancy until the child reaches the age of one. After this time, women are supported in taking steps toward independence.

A Home that Offers Hope

Experience shows that many women cannot return to their family homes due to rejection or stigmatization. Starting a new life with a small child and limited financial resources, they require both material and emotional support.
The bonds that form between the residents and the Sisters working in the home often continue even after the women leave. These supportive relationships play a vital role in helping the mothers adjust to new social roles and begin an independent life.

Pastoral Counseling and Care

The home provides material and emotional care for pregnant women and mothers who, due to difficult life circumstances, crises, or domestic violence, are unable to safely give birth or care for their children in their previous environments.

The family-like atmosphere within the Home for Single Mothers helps rebuild the sense of safety for women who have been rejected by their loved ones because of an unplanned pregnancy.

Each year, the Sisters of the Holy Family of Nazareth, who run the home in Kraków, receive over 100 calls from pregnant women in crisis, seeking shelter, basic needs, and perinatal support. This clearly demonstrates the urgent need for such places.

Mothers and their children receive shelter, care before and after childbirth, and access to psychological, therapeutic, social, legal, and pastoral support. In later stages of their stay, programs for gradual reintegration and independence are developed and implemented.

The support provided, as well as the stay in the home, is co-financed by the SOS Fund of the Archdiocese of Krakow.
